Sort by where it was used
Before packing, separate the entry pieces from table decorations and window items. Photograph any arrangement you would actually repeat. Then remove damaged pieces, tangled scraps and packaging that no longer protects anything. A small collection that is ready to use is more valuable than a large box of possible projects. Keep the photograph with the relevant group or label it with the box name so it remains useful when next October arrives.
Protect the parts that bend
Lay paper silhouettes flat between clean pieces of card rather than folding them into a pumpkin bucket. Wrap projecting stems separately so they do not take the weight of another object. Put ribbons into a small bag and wind reusable light strings loosely according to their instructions. Remove batteries before long storage when the product guidance calls for it. Make sure all decorations are clean and fully dry before closing the box, including fabric pieces.
Label for the next setup
Write a useful label such as 'Halloween: entry and dining table' rather than simply 'decor.' Note if the box contains fragile paper or needs to stay upright. Store it where seasonal items already live, not in the space you use for everyday cleaning supplies. Choose a container you can comfortably lift when full. If it becomes too heavy, divide it by scene instead of forcing everything into a single impressive-looking storage bin. Leave the label facing outward.
