Record the piece in use, not only at rest
Write down width, depth, and height from the product specifications, including protruding arms, handles, and legs. Then look for dimensions when drawers, doors, a sleeper mechanism, or a reclining footrest are open. A compact closed piece can need considerable space in use.
Use painter's tape suitable for your floor to mark the footprint. Add cardboard for a height reference if needed. Sit, stand, and pass the outline carrying something. For a dining chair, simulate pulling it back, not just sliding it under a table.
Compare nearby heights
Measure the sofa arm next to a side table, the mattress top next to a nightstand, or the existing chair you find comfortable. Product photographs rarely show these relationships reliably. For a cabinet beneath a window, account for the sill, curtain, handle, and window opening.
Keep a distinction between usable internal storage and the outer case. A cabinet that fits the wall can still fail to hold the item it was bought for. Ask for shelf depth and clear opening dimensions if they are missing.
Trace the whole delivery route
Start at the unloading point and follow the actual route through exterior gates, building entrances, elevators, stairs, and interior doors. Measure clear openings at their narrowest points with doors open. Record low ceilings, projecting rails, and tight landings. Confirm building delivery restrictions and whether the service stops at the curb, entrance, or chosen room.
Packaged dimensions are separate from assembled dimensions. Ask which pieces arrive separately and what the largest indivisible component measures. Do not plan on removing an arm or leg unless the manufacturer confirms it is removable.
Treat a tight fit as a question, not a promise
For example, a package listed as 31 inches across and a clear doorway measured at 32 inches provide only 1 inch of total difference. That does not establish a workable delivery: packing bulges, handles, approach angle, and the next turn still matter. These are illustrative measurements, not an installation allowance.
Send the seller or delivery team a dimensioned sketch and photographs when the route is close. A cardboard cross-section can expose an obvious obstruction, but it cannot prove a heavy three-dimensional item will negotiate a stair turn.
Check the final installation and order terms
Reserve access for assembly, leveling, and any required securing hardware. CPSC recommends anchoring top-heavy furniture and following the manufacturer's securing instructions. Check the wall situation and arrange suitable help before delivery if you cannot assess it yourself.
Save the exact specification sheet, confirmed delivery information, and return conditions with the order. Find out who pays if an item cannot be delivered and whether packaging must be retained. When an essential measurement remains unknown, choose a different piece or delay the purchase.
Compare the options
| Measure | Answers | Often missed |
|---|---|---|
| Closed footprint | Will it stand here? | Handles and baseboards |
| Open footprint | Can it work here? | Drawers and footrests |
| Largest delivery piece | Can it reach the room? | Packing and tight turns |
| Adjacent heights | Will it be comfortable? | Mattress and sofa-arm tops |
| Installation area | Can it be assembled? | Wall and tool access |

Common questions
Can I compare a doorway with the furniture's diagonal?
Not as a delivery guarantee. Rotation needs space on both sides of the opening, and a turn may limit the angle. Ask the delivery team to assess the full route when dimensions are close.
Is flat-pack furniture automatically easier to deliver?
Smaller components can help, but the longest boxed panel still needs a clear route. You also need enough space for the assembly sequence described in the instructions.
What if a seller does not list packaged dimensions?
Request them before ordering, including the largest individual package and its weight. A product photograph or assembled width is not a dependable substitute for delivery information.
