Measure the bed as it is used
A bed frame's advertised height is not the height your hand reaches from. Measure to the top of the mattress with the normal topper and bedding in place. Then sit and lie down, noting where you naturally put a phone, glasses, or a glass of water. Use a stable box to try a nearby table height before ordering. A tall mattress can make a low table feel awkward even when the furniture styles match.
Check reach in the dark
Try the table from your usual sleeping position, not only while sitting upright. Put the lamp switch and everyday items where you can reach them without leaning across a sharp corner. Check that a drawer clears the bed frame and opens without moving a rug. A smaller top with a useful drawer may serve you better than a wide surface that collects piles. Leave a distinct place for a drink away from books and charging equipment.
Let the two sides differ if needed
Two matching tables are optional. A narrow side beside a wardrobe might need a shallow shelf, while the other side can take a drawer unit. Connect them through color, a shared lamp detail, or similar visual weight. Check both walking routes with the bedding hanging naturally over the edge. If a table forces you to squeeze sideways every morning, choose a narrower option rather than accepting the inconvenience for the sake of symmetry.
