Everyday rooms

A warmer home, using what you already have

Published 2 min readBy Tovena Home

Move a lamp, clear the coffee table and bring a blanket within reach. Start with the corner where you actually sit.

01

Try the room after dark

Sit where you normally read or watch television. If the ceiling light feels harsh, try a shaded table lamp beside the seat. Aim the light at the book or wall rather than straight into your eyes. Keep enough light to walk through the room comfortably.

02

Keep a small, repeated palette

Look at the sofa, floor and curtains before choosing anything new. Repeat a color that is already there in a cushion cover or a throw. Cream, rust and olive work together, but use the colors you like living with. A room does not need to be beige to feel restful.

03

Put comfort within reach

Fold a washable blanket over the sofa arm. Give your cup a stable place to stand, and keep the lamp switch reachable from the seat. Put away cushions that you move to the floor every evening. The best arrangement is one you can use without first clearing it.

04

Let the room keep a few personal things

A photograph, a book you are reading or a bowl brought home from a trip gives the room something of your own. Gather small objects on one shelf instead of spreading them over every surface. Leave a clear patch on the coffee table for everyday use.

05

A bedroom that is easy to settle into

Choose bedding you enjoy sleeping in and can wash at home. Add a blanket if you need one; an extra decorative layer can wait. Clear the bedside table enough to hold water, a book and your lamp. Check that the route to the door stays clear at night.

06

Before spending anything

Move one lamp, swap two cushion covers and clear one surface. Live with the change for a few evenings before buying more. Take a photograph from your usual seat: it often makes an awkward corner or a crowded shelf easier to notice.
