Start with the night you actually have

Note how the bedroom feels at bedtime and before getting up for several nights. Heating schedules, open windows, and a shared bed can change what feels comfortable. Write down whether your current duvet feels too warm, too light, or simply heavy. These are different problems. Do not choose by season name alone: a product called winter bedding may be excessive in a heated apartment, while a lightly heated room asks for another arrangement.

02

Read the complete product description

Compare warmth information within a maker's own range and read how that maker describes it. A stated fill weight is not a universal warmth score across different filling materials and constructions. Check the cover fabric, quilting pattern, finished dimensions, and care method alongside the warmth label. If two sleepers prefer different amounts of warmth, separate duvets may be more useful than buying one much thicker duvet and hoping both will adapt.

03

Plan for changing evenings

A lighter main duvet with an easily removed extra layer gives you a way to adjust without replacing everything. Test the layers you already own before buying. Check whether your washing machine can handle the product according to both the machine and bedding instructions; a duvet that is difficult to care for can be a poor fit for daily life. Store unused layers clean and fully dry, and reassess when the room's heating routine changes. Also check that the chosen cover fits the new duvet without bunching at the corners.
