Find the instructions while the sofa is dry
Look under the cushions, beneath the sofa or in the paperwork for the care label and model details. Save a photograph so you do not have to lift the sofa every time. If the label uses codes you do not recognize, consult that manufacturer's guidance rather than applying a general internet chart. Check whether cushion covers are actually removable for cleaning; a zip can be part of manufacture and does not automatically mean the cover is machine washable.
Make ordinary upkeep modest
Remove loose crumbs and dust with tools approved for the upholstery, paying attention to seams and the spaces around cushions. Check the attachment for rough edges or trapped debris before it touches the fabric. Rotate or rearrange cushions only if the sofa's construction allows it. Keep drinks on a proper table instead of the arm. A washable throw may be useful in a heavily used spot, but choose one that sits securely and follows its own care instructions.
Treat an accident as a separate task
When something spills, check the maker's instructions for that material before introducing water or cleaning products. Avoid rubbing or testing several products in succession. Use any permitted spot-test procedure in an inconspicuous place and respect the stated drying requirements. If the instructions are unclear, ask the manufacturer or a suitable upholstery cleaner with the sofa details ready. A short routine for dust and crumbs is useful; it does not make every stain an appropriate home-cleaning project.
