Measure more than the wall width
Record the wall width, toilet height and tank depth, then note the location of the flush control, supply valve and nearby outlets. Leave enough space to remove the tank lid and reach plumbing when maintenance is needed.
Check seated and standing headroom. A shelf that looks compact on a product page may project farther into the room than expected.
Open shelves keep daily items visible
Open shelves work well for extra towels, tissue and lightweight baskets. Keep the most frequently used items between waist and eye level, and avoid placing heavy or breakable objects where they could fall.
Use one or two matching containers to reduce visual clutter while keeping labels or contents easy to identify.
Freestanding units avoid wall drilling
A freestanding over-toilet rack can suit rentals when its dimensions fit the plumbing and trim. Look for adjustable feet, wall anchors or another anti-tip method approved by the manufacturer.
Do not skip the recommended anchoring just because the unit surrounds the toilet. Narrow furniture can still tip when a shelf is pulled or loaded unevenly.
Plan for bathroom moisture
Choose wipeable, moisture-resistant finishes and leave airflow around towels and containers. Keep medicines and cleaning products in locations appropriate to their labels, especially around children and pets.
